What is 2009 H1N1 (swine flu)?
2009 H1N1 (sometimes called “swine flu”) is a new influenza virus causing illness in people. This new virus was first detected in people in the United States in April 2009. This virus is spreading from person-to-person worldwide, probably in much the same way that regular seasonal influenza viruses spread.  Visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website and the US Department of Health & Human Services website for more information.

National Diabetes Education Program

The National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP) is a collaborative effort between the National Institutes of Health, the Center for Disease Control, and more than 200 public/private organizations committed to advancing the health and well being of people with diabetes. The goal of the NDEP is to reduce the death and disability associated with diabetes and its complications by reaching the general public, people with diabetes, health care providers, and others who are and can be impacted by diabetes. They have free educational, suggestions for educating the public, and ways to impact diabetic support and care available at their website



CaringBridge® is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization offering free, personalized websites that allow people to stay in touch with family and friends during a health crisis, treatment and recovery. The goal of the service is to ease the burden of keeping friends and family updated, while also providing a way for them to send their love, support and encouragement.

PARISH NURSES AND PANDEMIC PREPAREDNESS

The Health Ministries Network of Minnesota has been proactive about pandemic preparedness. They hosted an event offered by the Central Minnesota Bioterrorism Hospital Preparedness Program and offered Minnesota’s first Faith Community Pandemic Preparedness Planning Seminar on August 29 in Sartell, MN. In a collaborative effort with public health and emergency management, the event was well attended by parish nurses, church leaders, chaplains, staff of faith-based organizations, and other community leaders.
